Create and work with comparison diagrams

 


This topic explains how to create and work with comparison diagrams—a useful tool for comparing the similarities and differences between two project items.

You need NVivo for Mac (Version 11.3 or later) to work with comparison diagrams.

What do you want to do?


 


Generate a comparison diagram

  1. On the Explore tab, in the Visualizations group, click Comparison Diagram.

  1. Select an option to Compare Sources, Compare Nodes or Compare Cases.

  2. Choose the two items you want to compare—select the first item, then press and hold the Command (⌘) key while you select the other item.

  3. Click OK. The comparison diagram is displayed in Detail View.

NOTE Alternatively, you can select:

  • A source, node or case in List View first and then click Comparison Diagram and select Compare Selected Item With.

  • Two sources, nodes or cases in List View first and the click Comparison Diagram and select Compare Selected Items.

Change the connections displayed on a comparison diagram

You can choose to show different types of connections on a comparison diagram—for example, you may want to see only the nodes that code an item or only the memo links.

To change the type of associated items displayed on the diagram:

  • In the panel to the right of the comparison diagram, select or clear the check box for the items you want to show or hide.

NOTE

  • The numbers in the panel to the right of Detail View indicate how many associated items of each type are related to the items that you are exploring.

  • You can hide the connection labels on a comparison diagram—in the panel to the right of the comparison diagram, clear the Connection Labels check box.

You can select an item in a comparison diagram and then open it to view the content.

  1. In the comparison diagram displayed in Detail View, click the source, node or case that you want to open.

  2. Control-click to display the shortcut menu, then click Open Item.

Export a comparison diagram

You can export a comparison diagram as an image file (.jpg, .bmp, .gif, .png, .tif) to include in presentations or your final report.

  1. On the Data tab, in the Export group, click Items.

The Save As dialog box opens.

  1. Choose a location to save the file.

  2. In the File name box, review the name that NVivo proposes for the exported file, and change it if necessary.

  3. In the Save as type box, choose the file format for the exported file.

  4. Click Save.

Add a copy of an comparison diagram to a document or memo

You can add a copy of a comparison diagram to a document or memo.

  1. Export the comparison diagram as an image.

  2. In your document or memo, make sure you are in edit mode.

  3. On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Insert, and then click Insert Image.

  4. Locate and select the image you want to insert, and then click Open.

You can copy and paste comparison diagrams to the clipboard so that you can paste it as an image into another application—for example, into a Word document.

  1. On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Select and then click Select All.

  2. On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click Copy.

The diagram is copied to the clipboard.

NOTE You can use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+A to select all, and then Ctrl+C to copy.
