Import items from another NVivo project

You can import another NVivo for Mac project into your open project. You need NVivo for Mac (Version 11.1 or later to import projects).

What do you want to do?

Understand which projects I can import

You can import content from projects created in:

  • NVivo for Mac (Version 11)

  • NVivo for Mac (Version 10)—importing may take longer because the project is converted as part of the import process.

NOTE  If you want to import a project from NVivo 11 for Windows, you must first convert it to NVivo for Mac format using NVivo 11 for Windows.

Import an entire project into my open project

CAUTION It is a good idea to make a backup copy of the project before importing. Refer to Save and copy projects for more information.

To import an entire project:

  1. Open the project that you want to import into.

  1. On the Data tab, in the Import group, click Project.

  1. Locate and select the project you want to import.

  2. Under For duplicate nodes, cases and user folders, choose whether you want to merge the duplicates or create new project items. Refer to How duplicate project items are handled during import for more information.

  3. Click Import.

When the import has finished, the Import Project Report is displayed in a preview window. This report lists all the items that were imported as well as all of the items that were not imported.

  1. (Optional) If you want to keep a copy of this report, save a copy from Preview.

NOTE

  • Where a project item is not a duplicate, but has the same name and location, the item is imported and renamed with an appended number—for example, Environment Report would be imported as Environment Report (2).

  • If the imported project contains folders that do not exist in your project, the folders and any hierarchical folder structures will be created.

What items are included when I import an NVivo for Mac project?

When you import a project that was created in NVivo for Mac, some items may not be imported. The table below lists which items are imported and which are not imported.

Imported Not Imported
  • Sources

  • Nodes (excluding result nodes and node matrices)

  • Cases

  • Coding

  • Classifications, attributes and attribute values

  • Folders

  • Result nodes and node matrices

  • Queries

  • Sets

  • Annotations

NOTE If you import a project that was converted from NVivo 11 for Windows, items that are not supported in NVivo for Mac—for example, framework matrices, PDF region coding, and relationships—are not imported. If you want to work with these items again in NVivo 11 for Windows, then we recommend that you perform project importing in NVivo 11 for Windows.
